The Corolla Touring Sports.

Seriously, if this came with the 6 speed I would VERY much put this on the top of my list. I love the GX but we’re coming to find out that we probably don’t need 7 seats, since carpooling is hit and miss anyway. That being the case it would sure by nice to have one car that breaks out of the teens on MPG.

Toyota seriously needs to consider selling this in the US. Its my opinion that one of the major reasons people are leaving cars in droves in the US isn’t so much AWD or ride height (there are lot of low slung FWD crossovers) but practicality. It’ s hard to beat the wagon shape but American’s haven’t been offered an affordable alternative to the crossover wagon in a long time. The stigma of “wagon” is LOOOONG gone, as is the Novelty of the SUV craze...as is evidenced by the fact that crossovers keep getting more car like with each passing generation. As a bonus the TNGA architecture also underpins the new RAV4 so it would be relatively easy to kill 2 birds with one stone here and sell a hybrid AWD model here.

There is no reason this shouldn’t be for sale in the US.

I’d drive that. B et it’d sell well enough to justify its existence here, at least.

Solution: Move to the UK. Between Toyota, VW group, Kia, Hyundai and Ford they have some many of these affordable compact wagons and available with manuals/diesels .

It looks soooooo much better than the “hatch”.

They are pushing so hard on the youth branding of the hatch that they are probably afraid of a wagon variant hurting that image.

It would also look much cooler with a RockStar livery, and RWD

That looks quite good, I bet it would look stunning in a more interesting colour! I bet it’d do pretty well here, especially considering the Auris (predecessor of the Corolla) did well here, although that was also partly due to the fact it’s a hybrid.

It would be interesting if a higher volume manufacturer would attempt the inexpensive wagon. The Golf Sportwagen is nice, and it’s not terribly expensive. But it’s sales numbers aren’t exactly stellar.

If anyone can  pull it off, it sure seems like Toyota could.

I’d buy it too. It’s basically the size of my 325 wagon but new and made by Toyota, as opposed to 16 years old and made in Germany.

I find my wagon to be a perfectly-sized family car. I am not special and my family is statistically average.

Cars like these fail to tick one seemingly critical box, though.  They are car-height.  I don’t think most of the people who buy crossovers like the higher up look of them per se, but one thing I hear over and over again is that they want the extra ride height.  People feel safer being higher up when surrounded by trucks and SUVs.  I feel like if people got over that, wagons would be much more popular, because they are actually more practical.

I will never get my wife out of a truck/suv platform. She drives an’02 Explorer now, and prior to that an ‘05 Town & Country. She likes being up high. She hates driving my Focus. It feels like a penalty box to her. As my parents are getting into their mid 80's, we might “ inherit” their ‘16 CR-V, which would be ideal for getting them around when needed, and for my wife’s daily driver.

I mean in this case, with a theoretical price on one of these is just get a Tour X, all tour Xs are at 10 thousand off sticker and for 25 grand you can get a fairly decent tour X, where this would probably land around 26-27 thousand starting.

Here in Texas, there are so many times when you pull up to an intersection, and you can’t see to turn around a big Silverado or F150 next to you. People start to feel small and vulnerable next to all the trucks. They want to feel like they can get up there and see, too.

I am not one of those people.  I want to drive a car, but I recognize where they’re coming from.

There’s also the hip point - you have to drop yourself into a car whereas you can slide horizontally into a CUV because of the higher hip point. As someone with a recently injured  knee and hip I’ve started to sympathize and when I take an Uber/Lyft driving a CUV it’s much easier to get in and out.

They aren’t. but they do represent about 50% of al golfs sold so there’s that.  I mean if anything Toyota should see that with the Corolla hatch and say “hey, we can sell twice as many of these if we made a wagon too”

the Venza was Toyota’s Honda Passport, except instead of trying to appeal to active young families , they were aiming at empty nesters and boomers.

But a buick is not a small manual transmission Toyota. Yes they are both wagons but no they are not equivalent.  I can’t see this topping at at more than 25.  The corolla hatch tops at at 22.

Yeah, there is no way Toyota would ever offer that wagon with a stick in the US, furthermore, I was mostly just saying the Buick would be a better value, it's not a 1:1 comparison, you get more with the Buick, but there are certainly trade offs with both

I believe this was one of the reasons given why cars like the Scion XB were popular with seniors.  I can tell you that it’s a main reason why my wife likes her Sedona.  With her rheumatoid arthritis, she has problems dropping int0 a car, but slides easily into the van.

I can’t say I disliked it, really. It just looks chunky compared to that Corolla. And in ways that don’t make it better.

Kinda like the way I thought my wife’s X3 was bigger than my 3 wagon in zero useful ways. Bigger, yeah. But it didn’t do almost anything better, including comfort and hauling stuff.

Local vins are W for Germany.

One problem (partialliy due to recovering the costs of importing.) is that all of the models are AWD, 2.0 turbo with a bunch of options being a buick. It’s in a weird bit of the market above the outback, but below the German offerings. A Ford would be fwd with the 1.5T. If they really wanted to move, it should have been a malibu wagon.

Kinja'd!!! Svend > gmporschenut also a fan of hondas

Kinja'd!!!0

So it’s a GM badged Opel product with German build quality, what’s not to like other than the import costs.

Your dealers come up with ridiculous prices for them which doesn’t make it to easier.

If only you had the system we have here, import what you want as long as it meets certain criteria or can be made to meet them, if you keep the car for at least five years, you don't pay any tax on it.

I’m not sure, although I’m not too familiar with the US market. In Europe the only reason this Toyota sells is because it offers the Prius drivetrain without the Prius odd looks. Ignoring the Prius drivetrain it’s not very competitive, it does not stand out in any positive way in a highly competitive high volume segment. It’s just ‘a car’. So you don’t see them all that often. Unlike the wagon versions of cars like the Golf, Focus, 308, Megane, Astra and most of the others.
